A Message from Tom Stimson

Dear Friends,

This is not the 2020 we had hoped for, but it is the 2020 we have. I have a couple of announcements to make, but let me first update you on what I know about the situation in Live Events.

You don’t have to look up for long to see that you are not alone in watching your entire revenue stream dry up in a matter of days. By now, your March and April are empty and many of your May events are making their final decisions about whether to announce their cancellation. 

June is still on the bubble, but that may have changed in the few short hours since writing this.

Furloughs, layoffs, and reduced hours are in play across our industry. This could not have come at a worse time. Regional show seasons were just getting underway, this year’s graduations were to be some of the biggest events those institutions have ever held, and many of you had just made major investments in tech based on a strong pipeline for the rest of the year. 

None of that is important right now. 

Stay home if you can. Social distancing is key to containing the pandemic and protecting the health of everyone you know and love. Our senior citizens and immune system compromised population are at extraordinary risk. 

Take care of yourselves, your families, and those neighbors that can’t help themselves. In the days and weeks to come, we will need to once again focus on our businesses.

Announcement 1:

I have changed the focus of the Wednesday, March 18 Intentional Success® Webinar to an update on the business effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Live Events Industry. You will hear what some companies have already had to do, and I will answer questions about how to deal with things like cancellations, deposits, layoffs, working from home, and managing cash.

Announcement 2:

We will not proceed with our May 4-6 Jumpstart program. I think it is inevitable that we would be forced to cancel, but the reality is that I would not recommend to my clients that they spend this kind of money right now nor should they take unnecessary trips.

Having said that, much of the content created for Jumpstart Strategy and Marketing is very timely and will be vital in helping companies emerge more healthy after this crisis passes. We are working as we speak on creating a combination of streaming and online courses to meet this need. 

Stay connected to the AV and Live Event community. We have a busy Facebook group called AV-Matters and you are welcome to join. Lots of good advice and resources are being shared.
